Pleomorphic Adenoma and Adenoid-Cystic Carcinoma of the Salivary Glands: Comparative Immunohistochemical Patterns

A series of 20 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and 19 cases of adenoid-cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands, and one case in the mammary location, were investigated regarding immunohistochemical reactivity for Tissue Polypeptid Antigen (TPA), Pre-Keratins, Vimentin, S-100 Protein, and their arrangement pattern of fibronectin. As a whole, the results support the hypothesis of morpho-structural and mainly, onto-histogenetic similarities between these tumours, but they also underline the need for great care in outlining their morpho-functional features, in relation to their different prognoses.

A new cell line (8701-BC) from primary ductal infiltrating carcinoma of human breast

A cell line, designated 8701-BC, was established in culture from tissue fragments of primary ductal infiltrating carcinoma of human breast. The cell cultures after the sixth passage were devoid of contaminating fibroblasts as judged by the positive staining of all cells with the specific epithelial cell markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and cytokeratin 8. The epithelial nature of these cells was confirmed by ultrastructural analyses which demonstrated the retention of specific structural properties characteristic of the original tumour. Tissue Polypeptide Antigen in Patients with Breast Cancer and Gynecological Cancer

Abstract The serum concentrations of TPA were determined in 67 patients with primary breast cancer, in 70 patients with metastasizing breast carcinoma and in 20 patients with ovarian cancer of stages III and IV (FIGO). Elevated TPA levels (>85 U/L) were found in 54% of patients with primary breast cancer, in 81% of the cases with disseminated disease and in 86% of patients with an ovarian carcinoma stage III. Preoperative TPA values in patients with primary mammary cancer were found to correlate well with tumor size and axillary lymph node involvement. A CRF-Producing and -Secreting Tumor of the Lung

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has recently been isolated from ovine hypothalamus, characterized chemically, and synthesized. Upton and Amatruda (1971) first suggested that CRF-like activity occurred in neoplastic tissues, and Hashimoto et al. (1980) subsequently detected CRF-like activity in an extract of an ACTHproducing nephroblastoma. Recently, Carey et al. (1984) and Asa et al. (1984) used immunocytochemical techniques to demonstrate CRF in postmortem tumor material obtained from patients with a carcinoma of the prostate and an intrasellar gangliocytoma.
